Place of event: Odessa
Odessa reserves the first three days in April for its Humorina, an elaborate carnival, complete with masks, colourful costumes and a parade. The city centre is closed to traffic and thousands of garishly made-up people sing and dance through the city, wearing papier-mâché noses and giant ears. Popular humorists and satirists from Ukraine and Russia (Moscow, St. Petersburg) - many of them have been popular since Soviet times - perform on several ope-air stages around the city. Everyone tries to outdo each other in April fool's jokes. The first humorina was arranged by students and was established in 1973 as the Day of Laughter and it is only held in Odessa. In the early years it was often a forum for satirizing the Soviet system which led to Humorina being banned between 1977 and 1986. Perestroika saw the festival's revival and won it in the support of the city council. Humorina is organized by the Humorina Club.

Meet your local connection in Odessa, Helen, Vicki, Tatiana and the team of Primexpress! We are excited to be onboard with whl.travel, working with nice people and a modern attitude towards tourism! We want to enlighten people about our culture, history, art, etc- and we like to present it in a very artistic way. For example, our tour "Home Visits" offers guests the chance to visit ordinary Odessa people in their apartments, meet their family and converse- isn't it a wonderful way of promoting our local culture?
