Getting to Odessa

By Train

To get the full experience of Odessa to hit you head-on in one go, take a train to arrive into the city. The railway station is centrally located and a great place to begin your exploration of the city.

By Sea

If travelling by sea isn't an option for you and you have taken another route in, do try and make some time for a visit to the port anyway. The dramatic glass and concrete building has been constructed using the latest in technology and design, and is both functional and comfortable.

You will find lots of travel and tour agencies within the sea port terminal itself. An enjoyable excursion while at the port is to the yacht club where boats are available for hire. There's no better way to embrace the seafaring ways of Odessa than to head out on a little trip into the salty waters.

By Air

Odessa is well connected to several European capitals, including Budapest by Malev, Prague by CSA, Warsaw by LOT, Vienna by Air Ukraine International as well as Austrian Airlines. There are also several flights to and from Athens, Moscow, Dubai, Istanbul, Aleppo, Larnaca, Kyiv, Tbilisi, Yerevan and Tel Aviv.

Odessa's airport is outside the city and is not very large, but flying in is a quick and convenient option for many travellers. A short half hour ride will get you in to the city centre. If you are travelling further, to areas like Marshrytka, then your journey may end up taking as much as an hour.

Getting Around Odessa

The Odessa Card

Visitors to the city appreciate the helpful services of the Odessa Tourism Department. Among their other initiatives is the Odessa Card. A one-time payment gets you unlimited usage of all the public transport in the city. To sweeten the deal even more, they have thrown in free entry to several major attractions, including 50 museums! Do also make use of your free trip on the Suomenlinna Sea Fortress ferry. Your card gets you unlimited rides and you may find yourself coming back more than once! Also on offer are discounts from some shops in Odessa - all you need to do is produce your valid Odessa Card to make use of the promotions.

Trams and Buses

A wonderful way to get around Odessa is to hop on the trams. They operate on time and are a delightful and unusual way to see the city.

Buses are widely used by locals and tourists alike because of the vast reach of the network as well as the rock bottom prices! The local buses can take you as far as the suburbs of Vantaa and Espoo.

Trains/ Metros

The local trains are popularly called the Metros here and connect to several parts of the city, with the Central Railway Station in Odessa being the hub. Trains run on many lines until no later than 11.30 at night, but during the day they are still the quickest and most economical way to commute.

Hiking

Explore Odessa and its surroundings on foot and you won't be disappointed. The city is known to be quite safe, and walking around gives you a much better feel of the city. The scenic tree-lined lanes, and beautiful buildings and cafes will ensure that you enjoy the journey as much as the destination you're heading for. Take a pit stop at a cafe or pack a picnic that you can eat by the seaside and you're sure to enjoy the walk even more!

Locals and tourists also like biking around and with as much as 900 km of paved bike routes laid down in the city it can be quite a treat.

Taxis and Ferries

Taxis are always easy to find in Odessa - you can hire one in advance or just walk out onto the street and hail one. There are also several taxi stands in the city where you can get yourself a taxi. As a tourist you may find fares are a little expensive, but that is quite common in the region, as taxi's are comparatively cheap for Ukrainian/Russian speaking passengers. A taxi or a gypsy cab can be hired right on the street simply by putting out your hand. Services of gypsy cabs are less expensive but are not recommended from a safety point of view.

Ferries are used to access nearby islands like Korkeasaari and Soumenlinna. These depart from the Etelaesplanadi jetty and your Odessa Card is valid on this journey. You can also use the HKL ticket on these ferries.
